WHAT YOU MISSED THIS WEEK…
I’ve been wanting to do an instrumental-exclusive show forever now and I thought this week would be perfect since not a lot of bands have shows over Thanksgiving and all us Pratt students are entering finals which is perfect for a study hour. The first couple of songs are exceptions, to get a couple shows announced, but otherwise all the following songs are instrumental! There’s a mix of old and new, played or not played, gentle or energetic, so there’s something for everyone. :)
I listen to a lot of instrumental music as I work or study, and I played this particular song on repeat for a long period of time after I discovered it probably a year ago. Great energy, perfect song.
Great way continue the beginning of the instrumental study hour with some natural sea (see?) sounds and a fantastic tune.
moments - the sees
g bus - tired horses
texas chainsaw dilemma - computerwife
Switching up the vibe with this very unique lyricless song that is sort of an intermission in this self-titled album. Don’t be alarmed if you hear some screams.
Talking about this song on air I made a comment about how I may be pronouncing this band’s name wrong and I only now noticed the irony in that with the title of this song. Anyway, this is a really good one and you should listen to the rest of their music, and they have a couple fun music videos as well.
✬ They will be playing at Mercury Lounge, a venue I love, on November 29th. Go see them this Friday!
I had the chance to chat with this band and they seem endlessly cool and kind. I also am a big fan of this album art — I bet it’s a real painting. Love <3
flat circle - pain don’t hurt
how do you say my name? - samsara.
Seabird - molly murphy
I played Molly Murphy probably a year ago now but I just adore her music. More folky and gentler, and overall just incredibly beautiful. The EP of hers that I played before and still listen to is called “Were You Digging for Some Deeper Meaning?” and it deserves your listen as well.
✬ Molly Murphy will be playing at Arlene’s Grocery on December 2nd! Make sure to catch that show.
migratory patterns - peel dream magazine
I have loved Peel Dream Magazine for eyars and have played them a handful of times before to show that love. This is their newest album from earlier this fall that is absolutely FULL of fantastic, vibey tunes. Including some instrumental songs! I love them so much, equally-so their instrumental songs, so I had to play more than one (you’ll see another later in the hour).
✬ They will be playing at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 7th! Everyone has to go to this show to make up for the fact that I can’t make it...
Continuing the spooky vibe with this band I’ve more recently discovered and they scratch my spooky brain perfectly. This is another album worth a full listen, called “Shadow Work”
Entering a moment of spooky vibes here. I love Cindy Cane; I listen to their song “Exorcize!” pretty frequently. I just adore the old horror movie vibe of all their stuff.
fish out of water - pons
mary, johnny, and me - peel dream magazine
I absolutely love a themed album. If you’re wanting a sailor-at-sea vibe, this short but sweet tune is the song for you.
Here is our other Peel Dream Magazine song! This is another full album of great music, definitely give it a listen. This is one of my favorites to listen to while I work.
1978 - cindy cane
sanitarium - haunting ghosts
dune - gift
I played GIFT what feels like years ago now but this is another song I played on repeat for a long time after I found it, perfect vibe and background for my work.
love paste - sunwatchers
If you’re looking for a band that exclusively plays instrumental bass with a zesty pop of personality, Sunwatchers are perfect for you. Also, we are so alike if that’s your vibe, we should hang out some time. I love Sunwatchers so much and they are perfect for today’s instrumental show, so I had to play two of their songs in a row. This first ones old, the next one is newer.
there goes ol’ ooze - sunwatchers
This is such a fantastic song name — it makes me giggle out loud. This tune has a similar but different sound to the previous Sunwatchers song, showing their great variety and talent in their music. I just love these guys so much!
mystic brokerage - miserable chillers
amethyst basilisk - party friends
I played a different song of theirs last year, but here is a new tune off of their more recent album from this summer called “Great American Turn Off” — give it a listen!
Embarrassed myself on air attempting this tongue-twister of a song title, lmao. Party Friends is another great pick for you if you’re looking for energetic instrumental music!
This is literally just the shortest little introduction to her full album, “Fountain Baby,” but I think it is so beautiful and it transports me to a different world when I listen to it, so I needed to play it for you.
all my love - amaarae
diving bell - row home (feat. marco benevento)
Ending the hour today with another solid jazz tune from a great local jazz band if you’re ever looking for a full discography of instrumental music. Have a great Thanksgiving holiday break, everyone!
